Humanitas holds concert in memory of Covid-19 victims
On Friday 17 March, the hospital will be filled with music once again. To mark the National Day in Memory of the Victims of the Coronavirus on 18 March, the Humanitas Clinical Institute in Rozzano will host a travelling commemoration concert. From 11.00 a.m. to 12.30 p.m., four musicians and a singer from the Operitage association – founded by students from music and fine arts academies – will play classical music pieces, performing in different areas of the hospital and the Humanitas University campus.
The performance is meant to be a moment to remember those who passed away as a result of the pandemic and to pay tribute to the commitment of all those who have been involved with great dedication alongside health professionals in tirelessly assisting patients, as well as to bring hope and light to the future.
It is precisely in this spirit that the musical programme includes six pieces, including the unreleased ‘Lux’ composed for the occasion by the young composer Luca Fialdini with the aim of encouraging a moment of reflection and recollection.
The programme includes:
- Eine Kleine, A. Mozart
- Lux, Luca Fialdini
- Love theme, Morricone
- Quando men vo, Puccini
- Al Ahloughs; Khoumar, Father Komitas
- String Quartet no. 12 in F Major, Op. 96, The American. II movement, Lento A. Dvorak

Humanitas’ commitment against Covid-19
During the years of the pandemic, Humanitas hospitals treated more than 11,000 Covid patients; this result that was made possible by the commitment and persistence of its health staff and by the establishment of new facilities, such as the Emergency Hospital 19 in Rozzano and the Emergency Center in Bergamo, built by combining medical and engineering skills to meet the new needs imposed by the health emergency. Humanitas has also been involved in the national vaccination campaign in its hospitals in Rozzano, Bergamo, Turin and Castellanza. Since March 2021, more than 700,000 doses have been administered to the population.
Lux, the unreleased piece by Luca Fialdini
In the words of its composer, “Lux” (for string quartet, soprano and optional choir) “began as a heartfelt Meditation composed precisely for this third National Day in memory of all the victims of the coronavirus epidemic. Aphoristic in its conciseness and elegiac in its character, it is intended to serve as a stimulus to reflection and meditation: in order not to distract the listener’s focus from this moment of meditation, I decided not to use any text, but rather to have the soprano perform a single, long vocalisation. Voice and strings are two distinct units in a dialectical relationship with each other, intertwining and drifting apart, glowing lines rippled by the passing – quick and almost imperceptible – of a shadow, immersed in a suspension that recalls the ancient universe of the modality, but internalised in modern compositional methods, creating a tangible link between past and present, memory and hope’.
