Excellent results for Humanitas University in the CWTS Leiden and U-Multirank international rankings

The University is first in the EU for the percentage of scientific publications in the top 10% worldwide by the CWTS Leiden Ranking, and eighth in Europe for the degree course in Medicine according to U-Multirank.

Humanitas University is ranked at the top according to the CWTS Leiden and U-Multirank international rankings. In the former, which measures the quality of an institution’s scientific publications, Humanitas University is 21st in the world and first among universities in the European Union in terms of the percentage of publications that rank in the top 10% worldwide in the field of Biomedical and Health Sciences. For U-Multirank, which analyses universities based on various indicators – from teaching to research, via scientific transfer and third mission – Humanitas University’s Medicine and Surgery course ranks eighth in Europe, after Imperial College London.

International rankings that measure the performance of academic institutions are increasingly consulted by students at an international level, particularly when choosing a university and their future career. There are many different indicators that contribute to building the various ranking systems, but the ability to do quality research is perhaps the most accepted and consulted one. Thanks to its close collaboration with the IRCCS Humanitas, the University has always paid great attention to the research performance of its lecturers, and these two ranking results are a proof of this,’ comments Marco Montorsi, Rector of Humanitas University.

More in detail, the CWTS Leiden ranking only takes bibliometric indicators into account, which are prepared by the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (Centrum voor Wetenschap en Technologische Studies, CWTS) of Leiden University, based on data from the Clarivate Web of Science. The 2022 ranking, which measures the quality of the scientific production of 1318 universities in the four-year period 2017-2020, sees for the first time the presence of Humanitas University which counts 644 (20.9%) research papers out of a total of 3078, in the top 10% worldwide[1]. The figure also includes publications carried out in collaboration with other institutions, confirming the importance of networking among international universities.

We are very pleased with this important milestone; it confirms that our University’s research activity is growing and this will allow us to achieve important goals in the biomedical field,” says Prof. Maria Rescigno, Deputy Pro-Rector with responsibility for Research, Humanitas University.

The Italian U-Multirank instead ranks Humanitas University second out of 82 universities analyzed, with 14 overall ‘A’s, just one less than Bocconi, which has 15. The best performance is within Research, with six ‘A’s[2]. U-Multirank also makes it possible to compare the individual study courses offered by the universities: the Medicine and Surgery degree course alone is ranked eighth out of 136 universities in Europe.

U-Multirank, financed by the European Commission, is a multidimensional ranking that aims to facilitate the comparison between universities based on parameters relating to teaching, research, third mission, relations with the territory, internationalization and technology transfer, in order to allow users to better orientate themselves in their study path choice. The universities’ performance is measured on the basis of ‘A’ to ‘E’ ratings for each of the parameters.
