Emergency Hospital 19 to fight infectious diseases

After only 11 weeks of work, Humanitas inaugurated its “Emergency Hospital 19”, a two thousand sqm facility located not far from the Humanitas University Campus and intended for patients affected by infectious diseases, including Covid 19.

The project was made possible thanks to Intesa Sanpaolo’s contribution to the Humanitas Clinical Institute and TenarisDalmine and Fondazione Rocca’s contribution to the Humanitas Foundation for Research.

Besides building the Emergency Hospital 19, a scientific research program in the field of immunology against infectious diseases has been implemented in the facility.

The project

The project, born from the collaboration between Humanitas’ technical-scientific team and Techint Engineering and Construction, has a double purpose: to create a structure capable of both responding to a health emergency similar to the one experienced in the last few months, and, at the same time, providing ordinary healthcare service.

The building is equipped with first aid, diagnostics, intensive and sub-intensive care areas, as well as surgeries and hospitalization rooms with 25 beds. The Hospital also includes a multi-specialist surgery and an angiographic room, which guarantee the best emergency interventions for patients affected by viral diseases.

A special attention has been given to rooms: their cosy environment, natural light and green surrounding areas make the Emergency Hospital an ideal place for the patients’ hospitalization.

A highly technological structure

“Together with Humanitas – says Taidelli – and by taking into account what we have learned in the last few months, we have implemented a new generation health facility, which is functional for managing pandemic emergencies”.

The structure has been designed to be transported, assembled and disassembled everywhere and therefore respond from a technical, sanitary and even aesthetic point of view to any situation. Taidelli describes Emergency Hospital 19 as “A truly universal and highly versatile concept”.

“We decided to invest resources and energy in a highly technological structure which is the result of an all-Italian engineering and medical effort to respond to the challenges we have been presented with” explains Gianfelice Rocca, President of Humanitas.

“We have experienced a ‘return to the future’ of infectious diseases which we must learn to co-exist with, and Covid-19 is only the latest example of such a trend”, explains Alberto Mantovani, Scientific Director of Humanitas. “To do this, we must be prepared. Emergency Hospital 19 means having access to the best of the therapy available, a close collaboration between laboratory and clinical research, and the possibility to use the most advanced technologies, such as computer and AI approaches for patient care”.

The research program

Next to its clinical commitment, the Humanitas Research Center has launched a scientific research program against infectious diseases in the immunological field, led by Professor Mantovani himself.
